Toenail fungus is more than cosmetic
Toenail fungus (onychomycosis) is stubborn and hard to treat. For people with diabetes or a weakened immune system, it's also a health risk — untreated fungal nails raise the chance of skin infections and foot ulcers.
We treat fungus from every angle
Nail fungus rarely clears with one treatment alone. We combine three proven approaches to give you the best chance of clear nails.
- Nail thinningYour foot care nurse regularly thins and removes infected nail with a specialized podiatry drill. This lowers the fungal load and helps treatment reach the nail bed.
- ToeFX light therapyThe cornerstone of your plan. A light-activated serum targets the fungus under the nail — painlessly, with no side effects.
- Prescription adviceWhen appropriate, we recommend a prescription antifungal and send specific recommendations for you to bring to your family doctor or prescriber.
Our nurses can't prescribe medication, but we'll make sure your doctor has what they need to coordinate your care.
Light that reaches under the nail
ToeFX ClearToe is a photodynamic therapy. A photoactive serum is applied to the nail, then a specialized light passes through the nail and activates it — disrupting the fungal cells underneath and stopping them from growing. Over time, a healthier nail grows in.
How long does treatment take?
Each session takes about 30 minutes, every two weeks. Most patients finish in about six months (12 sessions). To keep the fungus from coming back, most then continue with a maintenance session every 6 to 8 weeks.
Does it hurt?
No. ToeFX is painless, with no downtime. Your nail may look blue for a few days afterward — that's the serum, and it fades on its own.
How ToeFX compares
Prescription treatments can work, but they take a long time and some carry side effects. ToeFX can be used on its own or alongside them.
| ToeFX light therapy | Jublia (topical) | Terbinafine (oral) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it's used | 30-minute clinic session every 2 weeks | Applied to the nail every day | A pill every day |
| Typical course | About 6 months | 48 weeks | 12 weeks |
| Side effects | None reported — a temporary blue tint | Skin irritation where applied | Can affect the liver; your doctor may order blood tests |
| Prescription needed? | No | Yes | Yes |
| Reported results | 76% of toes at least half clear at 6 months | Complete cure in about 1 in 5 patients | Complete cure in about 2 in 5 patients |
Studies measure results differently — "improvement" and "complete cure" aren't the same — so these numbers aren't a direct comparison. Your nurse can help you decide what's right for you. Read the full research comparison →
What about laser therapy?
Laser treatments have been marketed for nail fungus, but studies have shown inconsistent, mostly short-lived results. ToeFX is a different technology — photodynamic light therapy — with stronger clinical results.

Pay at each visit, with no upfront commitment. For ongoing treatment — not a single session.
8-session package
$800 total. Save $160 compared with pay as you go — suits a shorter treatment plan.
12-session package
$1,080 total. Save $360. Covers the full six-month plan that clinical trials show gives the best results.
Not covered by AHS or Alberta Blue Cross. Some extended health plans may cover part of the cost — check with your plan. We provide receipts but don't bill insurers directly.
Pair it with a medical pedicure
Thick fungal nails can be hard to cut and painful in shoes. A medical pedicure keeps them trimmed and thinned between ToeFX sessions.
ToeFX FAQ
How much does ToeFX cost?
$120 per session pay as you go, $800 for an 8-session package ($100 per session), or $1,080 for the recommended 12-session package ($90 per session).
How many sessions will I need?
Most patients need about 12 sessions — one every two weeks for six months. After that, a maintenance session every 6 to 8 weeks helps keep the fungus from coming back.
Can I just do one session?
No. A single session isn't effective — ToeFX works through consistent treatment over time, so we don't offer single sessions.
Does it hurt? Are there side effects?
ToeFX is painless, with no downtime. The only thing you may notice is a blue tint on the nail for a few days after each session — that's the serum, and it fades.
Can I use ToeFX with Jublia or terbinafine?
Yes. Combining treatments often gives the best chance of success. When appropriate, we'll send specific prescription recommendations for you to bring to your doctor.
Is it safe if I have diabetes?
Yes. ToeFX is painless and doesn't break the skin. For people with diabetes, treating toenail fungus is especially important, since untreated fungus raises the risk of infections and ulcers.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book a ToeFX consultation online or call (780) 409-5673.
