If you live with type 1 diabetes, you may qualify for the federal Disability Tax Credit — a non-refundable tax credit designed to offset the extra time, effort, and cost that comes with managing a chronic condition. Many patients don't realize they're eligible, or that the credit can be claimed retroactively for up to ten years.

Once approved, the credit isn't a one-time benefit — it continues to reduce your taxes in future years as well, and the CRA does not require the form to be resubmitted annually.

Use the calculator below to get a sense of what a retroactive claim could be worth, based on the year you were diagnosed and your income.

Since 2021, the CRA has simplified the medical certification for type 1 diabetes — practitioners largely confirm the diagnosis, rather than writing a lengthy narrative. But if you're claiming retroactive years from before 2021, those years still require the more detailed clinical description the CRA previously required, which is where applications often fall short.

Some companies that help patients apply for the DTC charge a contingency fee — often a significant percentage of your refund, taken only if you're approved. We don't work that way. Our fee is a flat rate, set upfront, regardless of the size of your claim or whether your application is approved. It may also be claimed as a medical expense on your tax return — ask your care team or accountant for details.
